'Non tutte le isole hanno intorno il mare'
(Extract from Isole 2) 2003 Digital Video.
Realization: David Ryan and Richard Beard
When Nicola Sani asked me to provide a visual dimension to his 'instrumental opera' my first response was to think in terms of three video projections relating to the three solo performers of the piece. Soon after Richard Beard and myself started editing and collecting material we both realised a double projection would be more practical. In certain ways this then acted as a visual bridge between the players who remained on stage during the sections of the piece. The visuals were to be seen as another spatial dimension of the piece complementing the projection of sound into space. Synchronization with the music was avoided but there was the exploration of a random rhythmical flow which will no doubt be percieved as interconnecting with that of the music. This is an extract from 'Isola Seconda' for Harp, tape, and sound projection (the other pieces 'islands' in the piece explore viola and bass clarinet respectively). It looks at the urban choreography of traffic and walking; where the body negotiates the spaces of the city with its multi-layerings and dislocations
AchaB 3 WORKING SKETCH (EXTRACT) DIGITAL VIDEO 2006
This was a commission for the 2006 Synthese Festival at Bourge, France. AchaB is a set of three compositions by Nicola Sani, they are for clarinet, bass clarinet and contra-bass clarinet with electronics and 8 channel tape. The Video for the third piece reflects the ensuing widening and deepening of the sonic space as the three pieces progress. It attempted to use a collection of spaces together with material from the digital medium itself. Therefore colour operates as in the paintings, sometimes as a foreign element engulfing the image and any tendency towards representation. A version using all three pieces with video will be shown at the forthcoming Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in November 2008.
PRELUDE 2007/8 DIGITAL VIDEO
This piece comes out of the AchaB pieces, in particular the 1st screen of that project. It is in some ways a variation on some of the material included there - except it is a double image and explores a slow evolving relationship of sound and image. The present recording is from a live performance at the BFI, London together with some pre-recorded viola mixed in.
POSTLUDE 2007/8 DIGITAL VIDEO
This is a companion piece to the above. Essentially, together with the 'prelude', this is a two-part sequence, the first being manipulated and rather ‘abstract’, the second simply a chunk of ‘real-time’. The title Prelude and Postlude reflects the simple structure of the piece, and also a nod in the direction of the cinematic with its use of sound to build a sense of ‘before’ and ‘after.’
